Without her Velvet Heels and Marilyn Monroe inspired lingerie range, is Dita Von Teese a fashion icon?

With a self confessed obsession of women’s lingerie from an early age, a seemingly taboo and seductive history born from living and working as a stripper, a string of alternative celebrity partners and a mysterious and elusive personality, Dita Von Teese has to be one of fashions icons for 2009.

Her style is mirrored by her personality; rich, thickly feminine, luscious, curvaceous and seductive with a dark and sinister twist. Take the fake eyelashes, boob jobs, orange spray on tan and platform heels out of stripping and replace them with everything that encompasses Miss Von Teese. She takes the Vegas out of stripping and replaces it with a compelling and womanly feel. She is everything but a cutesy cheerleader and has managed to create her own unique brand and style by embracing her womanhood and curves and in doing so, becoming one of the sexiest and most seductive women on the red carpet to date.

An example of her unique, feminine and seductive style is displayed in her 2008 Wonderbra Line. Inspired by glamorous Hollywood styles of the 50’s, her range which consists of garter belts, panties, suspenders and delicious 40’s and 50’s style bras and corsets exudes such a sense of femininity its almost as though they have been designed purely for a women’s own self indulgence and not her mans. Von Teese is seen in the ad campaign seductively showcasing some of her line Moulin Rouge Style, adding to the already showgirl, exclusive 50’s stripper feeling you can pick up from her designs. In rich velvety high heel shoes, she changes her lingerie behind huge feather fans giving you a full taste of what her line looks like, and the power and inspiration it was born from.

Some say Dita Von Teese doesn’t deserve the recognition she is getting nor the celebrity status, as she is just another stripper after all, nothing more. Others seem to disagree. We gathered a few opinions to see what other women were saying out there:

Shelly, Knightsbridge

“Dita Von Teese is the most womanly woman I have ever seen. If I were ever to switch to the other team, I would hope it would be with her. There is something about the way she dresses, from her shoes to her hair style as well as the way she carries herself and behaves that makes even the most heterosexual woman a little weak at the knees.”

Kimberly, Hammersmith

“I don’t really pay much attention to Red carpet fashion, except for this lady. Dita Von Teese has this style that I have never seen before. It’s like she stepped out of a Marilyn Monroe movie. She is so elegant and womanly, I didn’t even know she was a stripper. Anyway, I just assumed all strippers wore platform shoes – I highly doubt Dita Von Teese has a pair of those!”

Kelly, Ealing

“How can girls want to idolise this woman. She is a stripper – she takes (well used to) her clothes off for money. I am sorry, but that is not feminine, that’s just poor taste. Take her velvet shoes and silly Wonderbra away and she no better than your run of the mill Vegas stripper.”

Cassandra, Angel

“Now here is a woman that deserves everything she has. She has never pretended to be something that she isn’t and has never once played the ‘I’m a poor girl that needed money for college’ angle. She blatantly started stripping because she wanted to, for no other reason. She is so in charge of her body and her mind, and is so confident that she is inspiring. I would love to spend a day in her shoes just to see what it feels like.”
