Lily Allen burst onto the music scene in 2006 with the release of her first single, Smile, and her debut album, Alight, Still. Not only was she making a name for herself as a talented female musician, but she was also gaining recognition of having a very distinct, bold and daring fashion style.
We all remember the days she paired chunky sneakers instead of a pair of high heels with summery dresses, wore massive hoop earrings and piles of make up. She created the glam chav rock style, and can be accredited for it today. Her style matched her attitude, which was loud, brash and outspoken. Throw in some booze, a thick cut fringe, attack a celebrity and you’ve got the then emerging stars’ characteristics down to a tee.

As Lily has grown though, as a person, celebrity and musician, so has her sense of fashion. From chunky sneakers, bad hair days and a naïve approach to fashion, she has transformed into a woman, but managed to keep her retro, personal style in tact. Now demonstrating “correct” footwear such as a pair of designer high heels with dresses as well as some chic outfits Lily has come a long way with her style.
Here is a list of Lily Do’s and Don’t when trying to steal her style – I mean if she can’t pull of pink hair, then who can.Don’tsLet Pink have the pink hairDon’t experiment with your hair colour if you’re being followed by the Paparazzi, and if you’re doing it yourself. If you have striking dark hair and decide to go blonde, please, we beg of you, go to a hairdresser. Don’t end up with a glowing orange hair do like Lily did after her home job. And don’t try and cover it up with pink hair. I’m not saying dying you hair pink isn’t cool or retro, but it does require the personality behind it, which although Lily has on paper, at the time of her pink phase, she didn’t. It just made her look like she was losing the plot!
Don’t pair chunky sneakers with pretty frocksSteer clear from mid calf length dresses and chunky sneakers. It’s just not feminine and does nothing for your overall shape or your calves. Its fun to kick around in at home, or on a grocery shopping run, but try not to hit up your local club in your trainers and pretty dress. Remember dresses/frocks must always be paired with a pair of high heel shoes. High heels give you a more mature and chic look.
Lay off the binge drinking and chimney smokingYou don’t need to be the drunkest girl in the place to be cool, or have Lily’s style. She proved that when she toned down at the end of 2008 after saying that she was sick of people calling her a drunk. So no more acting like a crazy rock star… the new Lily is far more sophisticated than that. Also - we all know smoking is bad, but some people do it anyway. A small hint though, when posing for media pictures, put the fag out!
Do’sVintage Dress UpFind yourself a humble, reliable and quirky vintage store and buy a handful of retro vintage dresses. Mid calf, full length, tea cup, rock n roll, 50’s, you name it. If it’s vintage, you need it in your wardrobe. Go for dresses with funky and vibrant prints, tailored waists and flared skirts to emphasis you figure. A vintage dress and a pair of stunning high heels is always a hit. It’s all about being girlie, feminine and chic.
Retro heels, pretty pumps and Lily Loves shoesSo you’ve tossed the sneakers, do what Lily does best. Replace them with gorgeous high heels and pumps. High, retro and funky heels of all colours and styles are a must. Lily likes to experiment with retro shoes, so think Mary Jane heels with ankle straps, thick cork platforms, T-bar heels with quirky details, peep toes and regular
high heels with funky prints and designs. If you literally want to steel her style, get your hands on some of the shoes she designed herself for her Lily Loves range sold at New Looks around the UK. If you don’t want the exact shoes and wish to create your own twist on her style then check out

It’s all about heels, pretty ballet pumps and high heeled shoes with a twist when it comes to the new and improved Lily. Sneakers and trainers will always have a place, but when you’re trying to prove to the world that you’re growing up, and deserve respect, then you have to dress and behave in a more sophisticated and civil way, which is what Lily is doing with her new style.
CardiesGet a couple of casual and smart cardies in your wardrobe. Look sophisticated and keep warm, Lily style. Easy to dress an outfit up or down, gorgeous cardies are definitely a Lily Allen fashion character trait.
The HairSo just because you’ve stopped playing around with dodgy hair dye, it doesn’t mean that you can ignore your hair. Lily has transformed her more childish look, made up of a pony tail and heavy cut fringe, by getting a bit of a hair style make over. She’s cut into her fringe a bit, grown out the pony tail and is experimenting with more elegant, yet still retro up and down styles.
Accessorise When it comes to accessorising, Lily has never gone really crazy, but definitely has her own unique style. She pairs chunky, neon, colourful and retro accessories with sophisticated outfits and fabulous high heel shoes to give her look that Lily edge that we’ve all come to love. So when trying to accessorise like Lily, look for boutique, funky accessories that will add a splash of colour or funk to your look, but don’t over do it, then you may as well toss a pair of trainers on. And take tips from her, massive hooped earrings are not the only earrings out there!
